Petri Karonen is a Professor of Finnish History at the University of Jyväskylä. He has studied the change of the Swedish and Finnish societies, the processes of state making and state building, as well as several periods of crisis in a long-term perspective. The analysis of the use of power in different forms is executed both with temporal and regional comparisons, and by utilizing the concepts of political culture and “the crisis of the peace”. Professor Karonen has also studied the Finnish business leaders and their societal activities from the 17th century to the beginning of the 1900s, as well as the interpretations of Finnish history in the 20th century.

Together with the other scholars of his team, Petri Karonen analyzes the different types of crises that took place in Sweden and Finland during the period from the 1890s to 1930s. Periods of transition and turning points are versatile objects of research, firstly, because the contemporaries these situations meant real opportunities for change and action. On the other hand, the State’s leaders and representatives of the elites were often strongly interested in to calm the situation or to support continuity in a one way or another. There are plenty of examples in Sweden and in Finland on both before mentioned practices. To put these cases to the longer perspective, on the one hand the relationship between change and continuity, and on the other hand the crisis and the “normal” have been highly important factors of the development and problems of democracy both in Sweden and Finland. The concept of political culture is – as in the project in general – on focus, and the examination for the driving forces of Swedish and Finnish democracy are analyzed in close connection with international policy and the economic life in general.
